Happy New Year to all our fellow anglers! It is a picture-perfect time to be on the water at Calaveras Lake and both the catfish and a surprising number of redfish are providing some top-notch winter action.In addition to providing quality guide services as we have for the past three decades, this year Fishing with Manny is adding a new wrinkle to help increase our clients' angling enjoyment by offering free emailed photos of their catch. All our trophy shots will be taken with our Cannon Model EOS Rebel T3I digital camera and, if requested, we will send a copy to your email address for a picture-perfect portrait of your catch. It is just another way for us to make each trip a memory of a lifetime!
With the mild weather during the past month, channel and blue catfish action has been on fire at Calaveras and shows no signs of cooling down. Water temperatures at the lake range from 69 to 75 degrees and that is just the way the hungry cats like it. We are finding limits at several of our honey holes and as usual, our bait of choice is Catfish Gold Stick Bait that always seems to put the cats in a biting mood. Anglers should not be concerned if an occasional cold front comes through - the catfish actually seem to bite better when there is a little wind stirring up the water and even the cold air temperatures don't seem to slow down the action. We are finding the best hot spots in water that ranges from about five feet to 10 feet deep and fishing on bottom seems to be the ticket for angling success.
Another New Year's surprise has come in the form of a few big redfish snatching up our catfish baits and giving our anglers a run for their money in handling big fish on light gear. This marks the first time in quite a while that the reds have been in a hungry mood during the winter time and we are taking advantage of the action to put a few of the bonus line strippers in the boat. The unusual winter action for redfish bodes well for the promise of good redfishing in the spring months - starting about the first of April. About 500,000 redfish were stocked in the lake last year so there should be an excellent number of reds ready to provide some quality downrigger action.
While the warmer water temperatures are firing up the cats and reds, the striper action remains hit or miss and baitfish appear to be moving around mainly at night. The story of slow fishing at Braunig remains the same, with water temperatures around 65 degrees. Most of the guides and other anglers are joining us on the water at Calaveras where there are plenty of cats and reds for everyone.
As always, we feature Sirius Radio (about 240 channels) on our boat to help our anglers enjoy the day and to monitor the changing weather conditions. In addition, we provide a free I-Pod Samsung connection for our anglers to listen to tunes or check the web if they ever get a break from the winter-time action.
